Kerala Houseboats: What People Expect vs What Actually Happens
TL;DR: A Kerala houseboat does not cruise through the night. Under state rules boats move roughly 8 am to 5.30 pm, then moor until morning, so an overnight booking is about five hours of cruising and fourteen hours parked. Mooring simply means where the boat ties up for the night, and it decides how quiet that night is.
| What people expect | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| The boat cruises while you sleep | Boats moor by about 5.30 pm and start again around 8 am. Night cruising is not permitted. |
| AC runs all the time | On standard boats the AC usually runs on a generator window, commonly from about 9 pm to 6 am. |
| Every meal is covered | Welcome drink, lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast are standard. Premium seafood is often billed extra. |
| All boats are much the same | Kerala Tourism classifies houseboats by safety and service standards. Two boats with near-identical photos can differ by several thousand rupees a night. |
| A quiet night on the water | Popular moorings such as Punnamada, near the Nehru Trophy finishing point, can hold several boats side by side with generators running late. The Kainakary and Champakulam stretches are quieter. |
| A day cruise is the same thing | A day cruise runs roughly 11 am to 5 pm with lunch only. Some listings still describe it as a “houseboat stay |
None of this makes an overnight houseboat a bad idea. It is still the best night of most Kerala trips. It does mean the questions worth asking are not the ones the photos answer. Before you pay, ask for the mooring point, the AC hours and what dinner actually includes. Tell us which boat you are looking at and we will get all three confirmed with the operator.

Kerala Tour Packages: FAQs
How much does a Kerala tour package cost?
What is included in a trip2keralam Kerala package?
Hotels, airport or station transfers, a private air-conditioned cab for the whole trip, an Alleppey houseboat night on backwater itineraries, daily breakfast with meals as per itinerary, and entry tickets to the listed attractions. Flights, Ayurveda treatments and unlisted activities are not included, unless requested for.
Can I customize a Kerala tour package?
Yes. Nights, hotel category, places, and add-ons like a houseboat upgrade or an Ayurveda day can all be changed. Send your preferences in the enquiry form and our Kerala team sends a revised itinerary and price, usually the same day.
Which duration is best for a first Kerala trip?
5 nights and 6 days, or 6 nights and 7 days. That is enough for Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey without spending most of the holiday in the car. Kochi to Munnar is about 130 km and 3.5 to 4 hours, Munnar to Thekkady about 90 to 100 km and 3 to 4 hours, and Thekkady to Alleppey about 140 km and 4 hours.
What are the best places to visit Kerala on the first trip?
For a first Kerala trip, cover Munnar for tea-covered hills and cool weather, Alleppey (Alappuzha) for a backwater houseboat night, and Fort Kochi for colonial streets, Chinese fishing nets, and Kathakali.
When is the best time to visit Kerala?
How far in advance should I book?
Two to three weeks is usually enough. For 20 December to 5 January, for Onam, and for the long weekends, book 2 to 3 months ahead. Classified houseboats and the better Munnar properties sell out first on those dates.
Is a houseboat included, and can I upgrade it?
Are there entry rules I should know about before booking?
How does payment work, and what is the cancellation policy?
Want this trip on your dates?
- The same day-by-day plan, priced for your dates and hotel category
- Your houseboat blocked the moment your trip is confirmed
