Alleppey Tourism: A Local Guide to the Backwaters, Boats and Beaches

Alleppey tourism centres on Kerala's backwaters, reached by houseboat, shikara or the cheap government ferry from Alappuzha. Visit between October and February for calm water and clear skies. Expect overnight houseboats from around ₹6,000, a working beach with a 150-year-old pier, and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race each August.

Alappuzha, still known to almost everyone as Alleppey, is the town most people picture when they think of Kerala's backwaters. A grid of canals runs through it, Vembanad Lake sits behind it, and the Arabian Sea meets a working beach on its western edge. We run trips here through the year, so this guide is built on what actually holds up on the ground: real timings, current costs, and the honest trade-offs most listicles skip.

What is Alleppey known for?

Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, is known for its backwaters, houseboat cruises on Vembanad Lake, and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the biggest snake-boat race in Kerala. The town sits on a lattice of canals, which is why it picked up the old nickname the Venice of the East.

Most visitors come for one thing: a night on a converted rice barge, drifting past paddy fields and coir villages with meals cooked on board. That single experience carries most of Alleppey's reputation, and it is worth doing. The district holds more than the houseboat though, from quiet Marari Beach to the birdlife across the lake at Kumarakom.

What is the best time to visit Alleppey?

The best time to visit Alleppey is October to February, when the rain has cleared, the water is calm, and daytime temperatures sit around 23 to 33°C. This is peak season, so it is also the busiest and most expensive stretch, especially the fortnight from 20 December to 5 January.

SeasonMonthsWeatherCrowds and rates
Peak (best)Oct to FebDry, 23 to 33°C, calm backwaters, clear skiesBusiest and priciest; book houseboats early for late December
ShoulderMar to MayHot and humid, up to about 35°CThinner crowds, lower rates, hazier light
MonsoonJun to SepHeavy rain, full backwaters, everything greenCheapest; some water activities limited; Boat Race in August

Our honest take: the monsoon is beautiful and cheap, but it is a real gamble for a houseboat. A grey day of steady rain over the lake is very different from the postcard, and the coir and beach activities stop being fun when it pours. If your dates are flexible, aim for November or January.

What are the top places to see in Alleppey?

The main sights are Alappuzha Beach and its old pier, Vembanad Lake and Punnamada Lake, Marari Beach, and the birdlife at Kumarakom across the water. Here is how we would rank the time each one deserves.

Alappuzha Beach and the pier

This is a town beach, busy and a little rough at the edges, not a swimming beach. What makes it worth an hour is the pier, over 150 years old, jutting out where cargo ships once loaded coir, and the Gothic-style lighthouse just inland. Come for sunset and the evening food stalls, not for the sand.

Come to Alappuzha Beach for sunset and the food stalls, not for the sand.

Vembanad and Punnamada Lakes

Vembanad is the longest lake in India and the sheet of water your houseboat cruises. Punnamada, its northern arm, is where the Nehru Trophy race is rowed. You do not visit these as a stop, you spend hours on them by boat, which is the whole point of coming.

Marari Beach

About 11 km north of town, Marari is the calm, clean fishing beach that Alappuzha Beach is not. Far fewer people, good for an actual swim and a slow morning. If you want beach time in the area, skip the town beach and come here instead.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Across Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom sanctuary spreads over about 14 acres and draws egrets, herons, cormorants and, in winter, migratory birds. Early morning is the only time worth going. It pairs naturally with a stay on the Kottayam side of the lake.

Skip or shorten: the paid backwater museum and the jetty-side souvenir strips add little. Put that time into a longer canoe route through the villages instead.

How do I reach Alleppey?

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, about 75 km away, and the nearest station is Alappuzha (ALLP) in the town itself. Kochi to Alleppey is roughly 53 to 60 km by road, around 1.5 to 2 hours.

ModeDetailsDistance and time
By airCochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest; taxis and buses run from outsideAbout 75 km, 1.5 to 2 hr by taxi
By trainAlappuzha (ALLP) has direct trains from Trivandrum, Ernakulam, Chennai, Bengaluru and DelhiStation about 2 km from the town centre

By boatGovernment ferries and tourist boats link Alleppey with Kottayam and KollamAlleppey to Kottayam ferry about 2.5 to 3 hr

Coming off an international flight into Kochi, a pre-booked taxi is the least painful way in. The bus is cheap and frequent but slow with luggage. Trains are fine if your timings line up, but the town station, while close to the centre, is not close to most jetties.

What are the best things to do in Alleppey?

The headline activities are an overnight houseboat cruise, a shorter shikara or canoe ride through the narrow canals, the near-free government ferry, and beach or water sports at the coast. Here is what each one is really like, with current indicative prices.

Overnight houseboat cruise

This is the reason most people come. A converted kettuvallam picks you up in the late afternoon, cruises the lake and canals, moors for the night, and drops you back next morning, with lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast cooked on board. A one-bedroom deluxe boat runs from about ₹7,000 to ₹9,000 a night in normal season, climbing past ₹15,000 in the peak fortnight around New Year. Book well ahead for late December.

One honest caveat: hundreds of boats now share the main route, so the middle of the day near Alleppey can feel like a traffic jam on water. The quieter stretches are deeper in, towards Kainakary and Nedumudi, which is where the boats we work with tend to moor.

Shikara and canoe rides

If a full overnight is not your thing, a shikara, a small open motorboat, costs roughly ₹500 to ₹1,000 an hour and slips into narrow canals the big boats cannot enter. A country canoe is cheaper still, around ₹300 an hour, and takes you right through the villages. Boats run from about 6 am to 6:30 pm. The early slot, on still water with the mist lifting, is the best of the lot.

Take the first boat slot, around 6 am. The water is calmest, the mist still lifting, and the day traffic near the main jetty has not built up.

The government ferry, the local secret

For next to nothing, ride the State Water Transport Department ferry. The Alleppey to Kottayam service costs a nominal fare, around ₹30, takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, and threads the same backwaters the houseboats charge thousands for. There is also a longer Alleppey to Kollam tourist boat that leaves around 10:30 am and cruises about 8 hours for roughly ₹600, though it usually runs only in the drier months, around December to March. No frills, wooden benches, real Kerala commuting. We tell budget travellers about it often.

The State Water Transport ferry to Kottayam threads the same backwaters houseboats charge thousands for. Carry cash, since the counter rarely takes cards or UPI.

Beach and water sports

At Alappuzha Beach, Kerala Tourism and private operators run para-sailing, jet-ski and speedboat rides in season. It is a fair add-on if you want a burst of activity, though the water here is not the draw. For a swim, go to Marari.

How much does an Alleppey trip cost?

Costs swing hard by season and boat category. The overnight houseboat is the big-ticket item, while ferries and canoes cost very little. The rates below are indicative as of September 2026 and rise on weekends, public holidays and through peak season.

Operators set their own prices and they vary widely, so treat these as a starting point and confirm at the time of booking.

ExperienceIndicative priceNotes
Overnight houseboat, 1-BR deluxeFrom ₹6,000 to ₹9,000 per nightPeak fortnight ₹15,000+; includes all meals

Shikara ride₹500 to ₹1,000 per hourSmall open boat, good for narrow canals

Govt ferry, Alleppey to KottayamAround ₹30Public boat, about 2.5 to 3 hr
Tourist boat, Alleppey to KollamAround ₹600Departs about 10:30 am, 8 hr; seasonal, roughly Dec to Mar

For late December, book the houseboat weeks ahead. The fortnight from 20 December to 5 January sells out and rates roughly double.

When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race?

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on Punnamada Lake in August. In 2026 it falls on Saturday, 22 August, a few days before Onam. Snake boats up to 100 feet long, each rowed by more than 90 oarsmen, race in front of huge crowds. Pavilion tickets have run in the ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 range in recent years, with premium galleries costing much more.

If you go, book a room months ahead. The town fills completely, prices spike, and late August is monsoon, so pack a raincoat and expect humidity whether it rains or not.

Alleppey travel tips

A few things we tell travellers before they go.

  • Book houseboats early for December and January. The peak fortnight sells out and rates roughly double.
  • Take the dawn boat. Whatever you ride, the first slot around 6 to 7 am has the calmest water and the fewest boats.
  • One night on the water is usually enough. Most people find two nights repetitive, so pair a single houseboat night with Marari or Kumarakom instead.
  • Carry cash. Jetty operators, canoe men and the ferry counter often do not take cards or UPI reliably.
  • Dress modestly for temple visits such as the Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, where men are asked to remove their shirts and wear a mundu, and women to wear a saree or salwar kameez.
  • In the monsoon, keep plans loose. Heavy rain can cut short beach and canoe activity, though the houseboats still run.

Interesting facts about Alleppey

  • Alappuzha is called the Venice of the East for the canal network running through the town.
  • Vembanad, the lake behind Alleppey, is the longest lake in India and the largest in Kerala.
  • The houseboats are converted kettuvallam, cargo barges once tied together with coir rope and no nails, used to haul rice and spices.
  • Alappuzha is the heart of Kerala's coir industry, and the fibre from coconut husk is still spun in villages along the backwaters.
  • The Alappuzha Beach pier is over 150 years old, from the days the town was a busy port.
  • The Nehru Trophy Boat Race got its name after Jawaharlal Nehru rode a snake boat here in 1952 and later donated a trophy.

The houseboat operators, the jetty staff, the drivers, the timings, these are people and places we deal with in person, not entries in a directory. We know which boats tie up in the calm backwaters away from the traffic, the hours when the lake is still, and where the crowds pile up, so we can plan your trip around them instead of into them.

For a full itinerary that pairs Alleppey with the hills, our Kerala tour packages combine the lake with Munnar and the coast. Still deciding when to come? Read our guide on the best time to visit Kerala.

FAQs

How many days are enough for Alleppey?

One to two days suits most travellers. A single overnight houseboat, plus a morning at Marari Beach or Kumarakom, covers the highlights without repeating itself. Add a third day only if you want a slow beach stay, or plan to visit the temples and coir villages at an unhurried pace. Beyond that, Alleppey starts to feel repetitive, so pair it with Munnar or the coast.

Is Alleppey worth visiting?

Yes, mainly for the backwaters. A night on a houseboat across Vembanad Lake is a genuine one-of-a-kind experience in India. Keep expectations low for the town beach, which is busy and average, and for the daytime boat traffic near the main jetty. Go for the water, the villages and the quiet dawn cruises rather than the beach.

What is the best time to visit Alleppey?

October to February, when the rain has cleared, the backwaters are calm, and temperatures sit around 23 to 33°C. This is also the busiest and priciest window, so book early for late December. The monsoon, June to September, is cheap and green but a real gamble for a houseboat, with heavy rain likely over the lake.

How much does an Alleppey houseboat cost per night?

A one-bedroom deluxe houseboat runs from about ₹7,000 to ₹9,000 a night in normal season, including lunch, tea, dinner and breakfast cooked on board. In the peak fortnight around New Year, rates climb past ₹15,000. Bigger and premium boats cost more. These are indicative rates as of September 2026 and rise on weekends and holidays.

What is the cheapest way to see the Alleppey backwaters?

The government ferry. The State Water Transport Department service from Alleppey to Kottayam costs a nominal fare, around ₹30, and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours through the same backwaters houseboats charge thousands for. A country canoe, at roughly ₹300 an hour, is the next cheapest and takes you deep into the villages.

How do I reach Alleppey from Kochi?

Kochi to Alleppey is about 53 to 60 km by road, 1.5 to 2 hours by taxi or bus along NH66. Cochin International Airport is roughly 75 km away, so a pre-booked taxi from the airport is the smoothest option after a long flight. Trains from Ernakulam to Alappuzha station also run through the day, if your timings line up.

When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in 2026?

The 2026 race falls on Saturday, 22 August, at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, a few days before Onam. Book a room months ahead, as the town fills completely and rates spike. Late August is monsoon, so carry rain gear. Confirm the exact date and ticket details on the official Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society channels before you travel.

Is Alappuzha Beach good for swimming?

Not really. Alappuzha Beach is a busy town beach, best visited for its 150-year-old pier, the lighthouse and the evening food stalls rather than a swim. For clean water and a calm swim, head about 11 km north to Marari Beach, a quiet fishing beach that sees far fewer crowds.
