The best time to visit Kerala is October to March, when the rain has cleared, the backwaters sit calm and both beach and hill weather are comfortable. December to February is the driest and coolest but the busiest and priciest. June to September brings heavy monsoon, low prices and full waterfalls.

When is the best overall time to visit Kerala?

October to March. The southwest monsoon has usually pulled back by early October, humidity drops, and you get dry mornings on the backwaters and clear evenings in the hills. December and January are the sweet spot for weather and the peak for pricing, so you trade cost and crowds for comfort. If you want the good weather without the December rush, aim for late October, November or February.

Kerala effectively gets two monsoons. The southwest monsoon runs June to September, and a lighter northeast monsoon brings scattered rain through October into mid-November, mostly as short afternoon showers. So an early October trip can still catch a wet spell. It usually clears by evening, but pack for it.

Kerala seasons at a glance

Temperature ranges are broad averages. The coast stays warm year-round, while Munnar and Wayanad run several degrees cooler.

Best time to visit Kerala month by month

October. Shoulder season. Rain tapering off, greenery at its peak, rates still reasonable before the December climb. Some wet afternoons are possible from the northeast monsoon.

November. One of the most underrated months. Weather has settled, crowds have not yet peaked, and the Theyyam ritual season is beginning in north Kerala's Kannur and Kasaragod belt.

December. Classic Kerala weather and full peak. Book houseboats and hill resorts well ahead. Rates climb sharply from around 15 December.

January. Coolest, driest month. Excellent for touring, worst for value. Kochi's beaches and Fort Kochi are busy.

February. Our quiet favourite. Weather is still lovely, prices ease off after the New Year peak, and the coast is comfortable before the March heat.

March. Warm and humid begins on the coast. Good for hill stations and for wildlife at Periyar, where animals gather at the lake as other water dries up.

April to May. Hottest months, up to the mid-30s with high humidity near the sea. Head for Munnar, Wayanad or Vagamon instead. Thrissur Pooram, the state's biggest temple festival, falls in April, on 17 April in 2027.

June to September. Southwest monsoon. Heavy, dramatic rain, waterfalls at full flow, and the lowest prices of the year. It is also peak Ayurveda season, when the humid air is considered best for treatments. Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, usually lands in this window, on 12 September in 2027.

When should you visit Kerala for what you actually want to do?

The right month depends on what you have come to Kerala for, not just on the weather. A backwater cruise, a wildlife trip and an Ayurveda break each have a different sweet spot, and this is the advice our team gives travellers most often.

Best time for the Kerala backwaters

November to February is the best time to visit Kerala for backwaters. The water is at its calmest, mornings are dry, and the first boat out of Alappuzha around seven gives you still water and mist off the paddy fields before the day boats crowd in. Avoid a monsoon houseboat if you dislike heavy rain, though the backwaters themselves are safe and the cruise still runs.

Take the first houseboat out of Alappuzha around seven for still water and mist off the paddy fields before the day boats crowd in.

Best time for wildlife in Kerala

Counter-intuitively, the hot, dry months of March to May are best for spotting animals at Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady. As waterholes across the forest dry up, elephants, sambar and gaur come to the Periyar lake, and the roughly 90-minute boat safari gives you a clear view of them. Early morning and late afternoon boats give the best sightings. October to February is more comfortable weather, but sightings are patchier because water is everywhere.

Best time for Kerala hill stations

Munnar and Wayanad are good most of the year. They are at their cleanest from September to March, and they are the smart choice in April and May when the coast is sweltering. The Neelakurinji, the blue flower that carpets these hills, is the one bloom worth timing a trip around, and it is widely misunderstood.

Each Neelakurinji population flowers only once every twelve years, and different populations run on different cycles. The famous Eravikulam National Park slopes near Munnar last bloomed in 2018 and are not due again until about 2030. A separate population around Chokramudi and Mattupetty last flowered in 2014 and is blooming now, first spotted in late August 2026 and spreading toward Meesapulimala through September and October (as of September 2026). So there is a bloom to catch this season, just not inside Eravikulam. Access to the 2026 bloom areas is being managed with online visitor slots and extra buses, so check before you travel. Treat any listing that promises Neelakurinji every year as a red flag.

How does the monsoon really affect a Kerala trip?

Honestly, more than the glossy photos suggest. The southwest monsoon is genuinely heavy. In 2026 it arrived early, on 24 May, the earliest onset over Kerala since 2009, against a normal date of around 1 June (IMD, as of May 2026). Rain is spectacular and prices are the lowest all year, but there are real trade-offs to weigh.

Hill roads to Munnar and Wayanad can see landslides and temporary closures after sustained downpours. Trekking and some viewpoints close for safety. Beach swimming is often unsafe because of strong currents, and boat activities can be suspended in bad weather. Kerala has also seen serious flooding in monsoon years, most severely in August 2018, so build slack into a monsoon itinerary and keep hill plans flexible. If you want green landscapes without the disruption, the tail end in late September into October is the safer bet.

In heavy monsoon spells, hill roads to Munnar and Wayanad can see landslides and closures. Keep hill plans flexible and leave slack in the itinerary.

When is the cheapest time to visit Kerala?

June to August, deep in the monsoon, is the cheapest time to visit Kerala. Houseboats, resorts and homestays all discount to fill rooms, and you can find genuine value on the same properties that command a premium in December.

The most expensive window is roughly 15 December to 10 January. Alleppey houseboat rates typically rise 10 to 30 percent through peak season, and for the tightest dates around 20 December to 5 January some operators charge close to double their normal tariff. As a rough guide, a one-bedroom deluxe houseboat runs around Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 for a day-and-night cruise in normal season, with premium and luxury boats higher (indicative, as of 2026; confirm current tariffs at booking, as they move with fuel costs and demand). February and November give you close to peak weather at clearly better prices.

Book houseboats and hill resorts well ahead for December. Rates climb sharply from around 15 December and peak in the last ten days of the year.

What Kerala festivals should shape when you visit?

Kerala's calendar is a good reason to time a trip rather than an afterthought.

Onam, the harvest festival: In 2027 it falls in early to mid-September, with Thiruvonam, the main day, on 12 September 2027 (as of September 2026). Expect snake-boat races, feasts and flower carpets, but book early, because locals travel home too and rooms fill fast.

Thrissur Pooram, the temple festival: On 17 April 2027 at the Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur, with caparisoned elephants and a famous fireworks display. The date is set jointly by the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswoms.

Theyyam, the ritual performance art: The season runs roughly mid-November to mid-May across Kannur and Kasaragod in north Kerala, with the most performances from December to February. This is Malabar's signature experience and largely missed by first-timers who stay in the south.

How many days do you need in Kerala, and where should you base yourself?

For a first Kerala trip we usually suggest six to eight days: two nights in the Munnar hills, one on a backwater houseboat near Alappuzha or Kumarakom, two around Thekkady or the Fort Kochi coast, adjusting for your pace. October to March suits this classic loop best. If your priority is wildlife, weight the trip towards Thekkady and Wayanad and lean into the March to May window instead. Planning your Kerala trip with trip2keralam

We are a Kerala-focused team based in the state, and season is the single thing we most often correct for travellers. People book December for the weather without knowing houseboat rates nearly double, or plan an August coastal holiday not realising swimming will be off. Because our team works with houseboat operators, hill resorts and drivers across Kerala year-round, we know which routes get cut off in a bad monsoon week, which properties hold their value in shoulder season, and when a festival will fill every room in a district.

Season is the single thing we most often correct for travellers.

If you tell us your dates, we will tell you honestly what those dates are good and bad for, and where a small shift of a week or a region saves money or dodges a crowd. Ask us about a backwater houseboat stay timed to the calmest months.

Ready to plan your Kerala trip around the right season?

Tell us when you can travel and what you most want to see, and our on-ground team will map an itinerary to the weather, the crowds and your budget. A small shift in timing is often the difference between a calm, good-value trip and a crowded, expensive one.

FAQs

Which is the best month to visit Kerala?

January offers the driest, coolest weather statewide, which makes it the single best month for touring the backwaters, beaches and hills together. The trade-off is that it is peak season, so prices and crowds are at their highest. For similar weather at lower cost, choose November or February instead.

Is it worth visiting Kerala during the monsoon?

Yes, if you know what you are choosing. Monsoon Kerala, June to September, is green, dramatic and cheap, and it is the traditional season for Ayurveda. But expect heavy rain, unsafe beach swimming, possible hill-road disruption and closed viewpoints. It suits a relaxed, resort-based or wellness trip more than a packed sightseeing itinerary.

What is the best time to visit Kerala backwaters?

November to February. The water is calm, mornings are dry and clear, and overnight houseboat stays are most comfortable then. December weather is ideal, but pricing peaks from mid-December, so book early or shift to November for better value and near-identical conditions on the water.

When is the cheapest time to visit Kerala?

June to August, in the depth of the southwest monsoon, is cheapest. Houseboats, resorts and homestays cut rates to fill rooms. The most expensive window is roughly 15 December to 10 January, when houseboat tariffs can rise 10 to 30 percent or more over normal-season rates.

What is the best time to see wildlife in Kerala?

March to May. In the hot, dry months, animals at Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady gather at the lake as other water sources dry up, so the boat safari gives clearer sightings of elephants, gaur and deer than the wetter, cooler months do. Take an early morning or late afternoon boat.

When does the monsoon start in Kerala?

The southwest monsoon normally arrives over Kerala around 1 June. In 2026 it set in early on 24 May, the earliest onset since 2009 (IMD). It runs through September, followed by a lighter northeast monsoon that brings scattered rain into mid-November before the season clears.

Is December a good time to visit Kerala?

December is excellent for weather, with dry days and cool evenings, and it is one of the most popular months. The downside is cost and crowds: houseboat and resort rates climb from around 15 December, and the last ten days of the month are the most expensive of the year. Book well in advance.
