Kumarakom Tour Packages
Kumarakom tour packages run 3 to 10 days. A short 3 night backwater break starts near Rs 4,134 per person (standard tier price). Longer circuits that add beaches, hills or a private houseboat reach about Rs 13,999. Every package here is quoted at its standard tier, with Deluxe, Premium and Luxury tiers available for the same route. Price moves with nights, hotel category, meal plan and whether you take a private houseboat.
One fact shapes a Kumarakom plan more than the tab you pick. Kumarakom is a short-stay destination, not a whole holiday. It is a cluster of islands on Vembanad Lake at sea level, about 16 km from Kottayam and roughly two hours from Cochin airport, and one or two nights covers it well. The real choice is where you sleep. A lakeside resort at Kumarakom, a houseboat out of Alleppey, or one night each. Most of our trips pair it with the coast, the hills or a beach.
What Do Kumarakom Tour Packages Cost?
Kumarakom packages start at Rs 4,134 per person (standard tier price) for a 3 night backwater break and reach about Rs 13,999 for a longer circuit with hills, beaches and a private houseboat. Rates are per person on twin sharing, room with breakfast, land only, as of August 2026.
Prices shown are starting-from rates for the Standard tier and are re-quoted for peak dates (20 December to 5 January, Onam, Christmas and New Year). Every package also comes in Deluxe, Premium and Luxury tiers for the same route, quoted on request. Houseboat nights are quoted on full board, as backwater operators sell them. Air and rail fare is not included.

Kumarakom Tour Itinerary, Day By Day (The Recommended 3 Night Trip)
This is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Backwater Break, 3 nights and 4 days, from Rs 4,134 per person (standard tier price). Two lakeside nights at Kumarakom, then a houseboat night out of Alleppey, all looping back to Kochi.
Day 1: Kumarakom and Vembanad Lake. Kochi pickup, the drive to Kumarakom, check in, and an evening sunset shikara ride. The high point is that shikara ride, when the lake goes completely still.
Day 2: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary at first light. The sanctuary walk at dawn, Aruvikkuzhi waterfall, Pathiramanal Island by boat, and a free lakeside afternoon. You get darters, herons and kingfishers early, with migratory arrivals from November to March. Pathiramanal is reached only by boat and access depends on the water level. An Ayurveda massage can be added on request at a certified centre and is paid direct.
Day 3: Boarding the houseboat at Alleppey. Transfer to Alleppey, board the houseboat and cruise the Kuttanad paddy belt with all meals on board. Lunch is cooked on board as you move out into Vembanad Lake.
Day 4: Disembarking and the drive back. Breakfast on the water, disembark, then the drive to Kochi for your drop. No early checkout rush.
Ready To Pick Your Dates?
Send us your travel dates and group size on WhatsApp or the enquiry form. Our Kerala team calls you, sends the full day-by-day plan with the exact price, and swaps hotels, nights or the lakeside-versus-houseboat split until it fits. A 50 percent advance holds the rooms, the houseboat and the cab.
Backwaters, Coast And Kumarakom, A 7 Day Itinerary Day By Day
This is the Kerala Slow Trail package, 6 nights and 7 days, from Rs 8,999 per person (standard tier price). Four stops in seven days: Fort Kochi, two nights at Kumarakom, a houseboat night out of Alleppey, and two nights at Kovalam, with no hill station and little time in the car.
Day 1: Fort Kochi. Airport or station pickup, a Fort Kochi walk and a free evening. The high point is the Chinese fishing nets at dusk, still worked by hand by teams of four.
Day 2: Kumarakom and Vembanad Lake. Drive to Kumarakom, check in, a free afternoon at the resort, and a sunset shikara ride when the lake goes completely still.
Day 3: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary at first light. An early morning at the sanctuary, Pathiramanal Island by boat, then the rest of the day free. Darters, herons and kingfishers at dawn, with migratory arrivals from November to March.
Day 4: Boarding the houseboat at Alleppey. Transfer to Alleppey, board the houseboat and cruise Kuttanad with all meals on board and a light Kerala menu on request.
Day 5: Disembarking and the drive to Kovalam. Breakfast on the water, disembark, then drive south to Kovalam for an evening at rest.
Day 6: A slow day at Kovalam. Free beach time at Hawa Beach and nothing else scheduled, an unhurried day with nothing booked around it.
Day 7: Departure. Trivandrum drop, after a relaxed final morning.
Plan A Custom Kumarakom Route
Not every trip fits a fixed package. Tell our on-ground team how many nights you have and whether you want birds, a houseboat, a beach or the hills, and we build the route around it, including which airport you fly into. Message us on WhatsApp to start.
A note : We keep extra boat hire and any Ayurveda out of the headline rate on purpose. Pathiramanal access depends on the water level, and Ayurveda is something you may or may not want, so we book those on the ground, tell you the real cost, and let you pay the centre direct rather than padding the starting price.

Why Book Your Kumarakom Tour Package With trip2keralam
We are a Kerala-based team that runs these backwater routes ourselves, so the plan matches how Kumarakom actually travels.
We time the sanctuary for first light, not mid-morning
Birds are active at dawn and gone by the time most tours arrive. We build the sanctuary day around a first-light walk, which is the difference between a full hide and an empty one, and we tell you when the migratory window from November to March is worth the early start.
We make the Kumarakom versus Alleppey call for you
These are different waters, not the same trip twice. We tell you when to stay lakeside at Kumarakom for the quiet and the birds, and when the Alleppey houseboat earns its night, rather than selling you both and hoping.
Houseboats quoted on full board, in writing
Kumarakom and Alleppey boats sell on full board, and we state it in the inclusions so there is no meal surprise on the water. The boats we work with are ones we have used ourselves, not a name off a listing.
We do not pad the price with Ayurveda or spa
We sell stays, transfers and sightseeing, not wellness programmes. If you want an Ayurveda session or a massage, we point you to a certified centre near where you are staying and you pay direct, so the package price stays what it says it is.
One coordinator for the whole trip
Your driver meets you at the airport and a single coordinator stays reachable start to finish. If a boat operator reshuffles a slot or a resort overbooks, one person fixes it, not a call centre.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Kumarakom?
November to February (best overall)
Clear skies, cool evenings and the calmest water. Migratory birds are in at the sanctuary alongside resident darters, herons and egrets. Peak season, so book resorts and houseboats early, and expect re-quoted rates over Christmas, New Year and Onam.
November to March (for the bird sanctuary)
The migratory window. Siberian and Himalayan visitors arrive, and a first-light walk is when the hides are fullest.
March to May (shoulder, hot)
Humid and warm, but still fine for a houseboat and a lakeside stay. Smaller crowds and lower rates than winter.
June to September (monsoon, low season)
Backwaters stay full and green, and prices drop sharply. Rain rarely blocks a Kumarakom trip the way it slows a hill road, since the terrain is flat, but heavy spells can cut a shikara ride short and thin the birdlife.
October (transition)
Rain easing, greenery at its peak, rates still below winter. A good value pocket just before the season turns.
How Many Days Do You Need In Kumarakom?
One night sees the highlights. Two nights is the honest sweet spot: a dawn at the bird sanctuary, a shikara ride and a houseboat night without rushing.
A single night fits a sunset shikara ride and one houseboat cruise, which is enough if Kumarakom is a stopover. Add a night and you get the sanctuary at first light, Pathiramanal Island, Aruvikkuzhi waterfall and an unhurried lakeside afternoon. Beyond two nights, Kumarakom becomes the opening leg of a wider trip, paired with Alleppey and Kochi for a pure backwater run, with Marari, Varkala and Kovalam for the beaches, or with Munnar and Thekkady for hills and wildlife. Booking three lakeside nights in one resort makes sense mainly for pure rest.
How Do You Reach Kumarakom, And How Far Is It From Kochi?
Kumarakom has no airport or railway of its own. The nearest airport is Cochin International, about 85 km and 2 to 2.5 hours by road. The nearest railway station is Kottayam, about 16 km and 30 minutes away.
By air, Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is the practical choice, roughly 85 km north, 2 to 2.5 hours depending on Ernakulam traffic. Trivandrum airport suits trips that end on the southern beaches. By train, Kottayam is the closest railhead at about 16 km, with Ernakulam and Alleppey also within easy reach. By road, Kumarakom sits about 50 km from Kochi city, 1.5 to 2 hours, on flat backwater roads with no ghat section at all, which is the opposite of reaching a Kerala hill station.
Kumarakom Or Alleppey, Which Backwater Should You Choose?
Choose Kumarakom for quiet, birds and lakeside resorts, and Alleppey for the houseboat itself and the busier Kuttanad canals. Most of our trips do both: a lakeside night at Kumarakom, a cruising night from Alleppey.
Kumarakom sits on the open expanse of Vembanad Lake and is calmer, greener and better for the bird sanctuary and lake-facing resorts. Alleppey, about an hour south, is where the houseboat traffic concentrates and where the narrow Kuttanad canals and paddy bunds are at their most photogenic, though on peak weekends the main routes get crowded. If you want stillness and birds, base at Kumarakom. If the boat is the whole point, cruise from Alleppey. The short backwater packages above give you a night of each, which is the split we recommend to most first-time visitors.
Kumarakom At A Glance, Distances, Season And Key Facts
Quick reference for planning. Named places, distances and terms you will meet on a Kumarakom trip.
Location: A cluster of small islands on Vembanad Lake in Kottayam district, part of Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala. Reclaimed as farmland in the late 1800s.
Altitude: Near sea level. Vembanad and the Kuttanad paddy fields sit at or just below sea level, so there is no climb and no ghat road.
Vembanad Lake: Kerala's largest lake and the longest lake in India, the setting for the backwaters and, at Alleppey, the Nehru Trophy snake boat race.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: A reserve of about 14 acres on the lake, known for darters, herons, egrets, cormorants and kingfishers, with migratory species from November to March. Usually best walked at first light.
Pathiramanal Island: A small island in Vembanad reached only by boat, a resting point for migratory birds, with access subject to water level.
Aruvikkuzhi waterfall: A small cascade a short drive from the sanctuary, a low-key half-hour stop.
Nearest airport: Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery), about 85 km, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by road.
Nearest railway: Kottayam, about 16 km, roughly 30 minutes.
Drive from Kochi city: About 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hours depending on Ernakulam traffic.
Best months: November to February for migratory birds and calm water. June to September is low season with the lowest rates.
Known for: Backwaters, kettuvallam houseboats, birdwatching, lakeside resorts and being quieter than Alleppey.
Local terms: Kettuvallam, the traditional rice-barge houseboat; shikara, a small paddled or motor canoe; Kuttanad, the below-sea-level farming belt; Punnamada, the Alleppey stretch of the same lake.
How Do Booking And Cancellation Work?
Booking takes a 50 percent advance to hold your hotels, houseboat and cab, with the balance before or on arrival. Changes need 30 days' written notice. Inside 30 days, the package amount is retained in full.
How booking works
- Enquire by form or WhatsApp with a package, or a description of the trip you want.
- Our Kerala team calls you, then sends a full day-by-day itinerary with the exact price.
- You swap hotels, places or nights until the plan fits.
- A 50 percent advance confirms the booking and locks the hotels, houseboat and cab.
- The balance is due before departure or on arrival, paid by bank wire transfer.
- Your driver meets you at the airport or station, and a coordinator stays reachable through the trip.
Cancellation
- Changes and cancellations must reach us in writing at least 30 days before check-in, and stay subject to hotel and houseboat availability.
- Inside 30 days, no amendment, postponement or cancellation is possible, and the full package value is retained.
- Bookings travelling between 20 December and 5 January are non-refundable, because hotels and houseboats charge peak rates under their own no-refund terms.
- No refund applies to no-shows, unused nights or an early checkout.
- Houseboat, hotel and activity components follow the operator's own cancellation rules in peak season.
- For monsoon travel between June and September, travel insurance is recommended and road conditions are monitored.
Kumarakom Tour Package FAQs
How much does a Kumarakom tour package cost per person?
A 3 night backwater break starts near Rs 4,134 per person (standard tier price) on twin sharing, room with breakfast, land only, as of August 2026. Packages that add Kovalam, Marari, Varkala, the hills or a private houseboat run Rs 8,999 to Rs 13,999 at the standard tier, with Deluxe, Premium and Luxury tiers quoted higher. The houseboat night is full board. Air and rail fare, extra boat hire and any Ayurveda sit outside these rates.
How many days do you need in Kumarakom?
One night covers a sunset shikara ride and a houseboat cruise. Two nights is the sweet spot, adding the bird sanctuary at first light, Pathiramanal Island and an unhurried lakeside afternoon. Beyond two nights, Kumarakom works best as the first leg of a wider Kerala trip rather than a stay on its own.
What is the best time to visit Kumarakom?
November to February is best. The migratory birds are in, the lake is calm and the evenings are cool. March to May is hot but fine for a houseboat and lakeside stay with fewer crowds. June to September is the low season with the lowest rates, though heavy rain can cut a shikara ride short and thin the birdlife.
Should I stay in Kumarakom or take a houseboat at Alleppey?
Do both if you can. Stay a lakeside night at Kumarakom for the quiet, the resorts and the bird sanctuary, then take one cruising night on a houseboat out of Alleppey, about an hour south, where the Kuttanad canals are at their best. Our short backwater packages give you a night of each, which is the split most first-timers prefer.
Is Kumarakom worth visiting, or is it just for birdwatchers?
It is worth it even if you never lift a pair of binoculars. Kumarakom is the calm, green side of the Kerala backwaters, with lakeside resorts, sunset shikara rides and a houseboat cruise, all at a slower pace than Alleppey. The bird sanctuary is a bonus in migratory season, not the only reason to come.
Is Kumarakom good for a family trip or a honeymoon?
Do you sell Ayurveda packages at Kumarakom?
No. We sell stays, transfers, sightseeing and houseboats, not Ayurveda or wellness programmes. Kumarakom does have certified centres, so if you want a massage or a session we will point you to one near your resort and you book and pay it direct. That way the package price stays exactly what we quote you.
Is Kumarakom worth visiting in the monsoon?
Yes, with the right expectations. June to September keeps the backwaters full and green and drops prices sharply. Rain rarely blocks a Kumarakom trip the way it slows a hill road, since the terrain is flat. Heavy spells can shorten a shikara ride and thin the birdlife, so keep the plan flexible if you travel then.
