The best way to reach Kerala is to fly into Kochi, the most central airport, then continue by road or rail. You can also arrive by train through Ernakulam or Thiruvananthapuram, or by interstate KSRTC bus from Bengaluru, Chennai and Mangaluru. Match your entry city to your first stop, not the biggest airport.
| How to reach Kerala | At a glance |
|---|---|
| By flight | Four airports: Kochi (COK), Trivandrum (TRV), Calicut (CCJ), Kannur (CNN). Kochi is the most central and best connected. |
| By train | Main hubs: Ernakulam Junction and Town (Kochi) and Thiruvananthapuram Central. Long-distance trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. |
| By bus | KSRTC and private Volvo or sleeper services from Bengaluru, Chennai, Mysuru, Coimbatore and Mangaluru. |
| Best entry city | Backwaters and Munnar: Kochi. South Kerala beaches: Trivandrum. Wayanad and Malabar: Calicut or Kannur. |
Which is the best way to reach Kerala?
For most travellers, flying into Kochi. It sits in the middle of the state, so Munnar, Alleppey, Thekkady and Fort Kochi are all within a half-day drive. If your trip is built around the far south, fly into Trivandrum. For Wayanad, Bekal and the Malabar coast, Calicut or Kannur saves you hours on the road.
Trains work well if you are coming from South Indian cities and want to save on airfare, though the run from North India is long. Buses are the cheapest option from neighbouring states, but they only make sense from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. We usually tell travellers to match the arrival point to the first stop on the itinerary rather than defaulting to the biggest airport.
Match your arrival airport to the first stop on your itinerary, not the biggest airport. Kerala is long and narrow, so the wrong corner costs you a day of backtracking.
How do I reach Kerala by flight?
Kerala has four airports, and three of them handle international traffic. Kochi, or Cochin International Airport, code COK, is the busiest and most central, which is why most of our guests fly in here. The table below shows what each airport is best for.
Approximate non-stop flight times to Kochi: Bengaluru around 1 hour 15 minutes, Chennai around 1 hour 20 minutes, Hyderabad around 1 hour 30 minutes, Mumbai around 2 hours, and Delhi around 3 hours. All four airports connect to the Gulf, which matters if you are flying in from the UAE, Oman, Qatar or Saudi Arabia.
| Airport | Code | Distance to city | Best for reaching |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cochin (Kochi) | COK | About 28 km (Nedumbassery) | Munnar, Alleppey, Thekkady, Fort Kochi, Kumarakom |
| Trivandrum | TRV | About 4 km from the city | Kovalam, Varkala, Poovar, southern Alleppey |
| Calicut (Kozhikode) | CCJ | About 25 km (Karipur) | Wayanad, Malabar coast, Kozhikode |
| Kannur | CNN | About 25 km (Mattannur) | Bekal, Kasaragod, north Wayanad, Thalassery |
Which airport should I fly into for Kerala?
Fly into Kochi if your plan covers the classic circuit of Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. Fly into Trivandrum if you are starting in the south with Kovalam or Varkala. One honest caution: Kannur airport, which opened in 2018, has the thinnest domestic network of the four, so from many Indian cities you will connect through another hub rather than fly direct. Check direct availability before you book it as your entry point.
How do I reach Kerala by train?
You reach Kerala by train through one of its main junctions, then travel onward by road. Kerala has close to 200 railway stations, but the two you will use most are Ernakulam, both Junction and Town in Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram Central, the state's busiest station. Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kollam and Kannur are the other useful stops depending on where you are headed.
The catch with the hills: Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad have no railway stations. You take a train to the nearest junction, then a cab or bus up. For Munnar that means Ernakulam or Aluva, roughly a four-hour drive from there.
Journey times vary by train and are approximate. Confirm exact timings and fares on IRCTC before booking.
| From | Approx. train time to Kerala | Handy for |
|---|---|---|
| Chennai | About 12 to 15 hours | Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram |
| Bengaluru | About 12 to 14 hours | Kozhikode, Ernakulam |
| Mumbai | About 24 to 30 hours | Ernakulam, Kozhikode |
| Delhi | About 40 to 48 hours | Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram |
Is there a Vande Bharat to Kerala?
Yes, but mostly for travel within the state and from neighbouring hubs, not from far North India. As of September 2026, the Mangaluru Central to Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat runs the full Kerala coast, about 620 km in roughly 8 hours 40 minutes, six days a week except Wednesday, with stops that include Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Ernakulam. This service was extended from the original Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram route. A Vande Bharat also links Bengaluru with Ernakulam via Coimbatore. These are a comfortable, fast option if you are coming from Mangaluru or Bengaluru. Schedules change, so verify the current timetable on IRCTC.
How do I reach Kerala by bus?
You reach Kerala by bus mainly from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, on either state-run KSRTC services or private operators. KSRTC runs interstate routes to Bengaluru, Chennai, Mysuru, Coimbatore and Mangaluru, and its premium arm, KSRTC SWIFT, operates AC Volvo and sleeper buses on the longer overnight routes.
The busiest interstate terminals are the Central Bus Station at Thiruvananthapuram in the south and the KSRTC stands at Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Kannur. Private Volvo and sleeper buses cover the same corridors and often run more frequently overnight. Book KSRTC seats on the official online reservation system, and for private buses the usual aggregator apps work.
One realistic note: buses are the cheapest way in, but only from the neighbouring states. From anywhere further than Karnataka or Tamil Nadu, a train or flight will save you a punishing amount of road time.
Which entry city matches my Kerala trip?
The single biggest mistake we see is arriving in the wrong corner of the state and losing a day to backtracking. Kerala is long and narrow, so your entry point should sit close to your first stop.

Can you reach Kerala by sea?
Not as a regular passenger route. Kochi has a busy port and a cruise terminal, and international cruise ships do call there in season, but there is no scheduled ferry service that brings travellers to Kerala from other Indian states. The one passenger sailing that runs from Kochi is the ship to the Lakshadweep islands, which goes the other way. For practical planning, treat air, rail and road as your three real options.
How do I travel within Kerala?
Once you are in Kerala, the easiest way to get around for a multi-stop trip is a hired car with a driver, backed up by trains between the coastal cities and local buses for short hops. Kerala is compact, but the hill roads are slow, so how you get around matters as much as how you arrive.
For a typical first trip that strings together the backwaters and a hill station, we usually put travellers in a car with a driver. It removes the daily puzzle of finding transport up to Munnar, and a local driver reads the ghat roads and the monsoon better than any app. For couples and backpackers watching the budget, the coastal trains plus the odd auto do the job well between cities.
App cabs are reliable only in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode. In Munnar, Wayanad and Alleppey, arrange a prepaid taxi or a car in advance instead.
| Mode | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Car with driver | The Munnar to Thekkady to Alleppey circuit, hills, families | Most flexible, and the driver knows the ghat roads. Booked per day. |
| Train | City to city along the coast | Cheap and quick between Trivandrum, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode. No hill stations. |
| KSRTC and private bus | Budget travel, short routes | The widest network in the state. Private buses are faster on short hops. |
| App cab (Ola, Uber) | Getting about within big cities | Reliable mainly in Kochi, Trivandrum, Thrissur and Kozhikode. Patchy elsewhere. |
| Auto-rickshaw | Short city hops and stations | Agree the fare first or insist on the meter, especially at tourist spots. |
| Ferry and Kochi Water Metro | Kochi islands, backwater crossings | Water Metro e-ferries run through the day into the evening, fares from about ₹20 (as of September 2026). |
Are Ola and Uber available across Kerala?
Only in the larger cities. App cabs are dependable in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode, but thin out fast beyond them. In Munnar, Wayanad, Alleppey and smaller towns, plan on prepaid taxis, autos or a pre-arranged car rather than opening an app and hoping. This is the single most common transport surprise for first-time visitors.
When is the worst time to arrive, and what to avoid
Kerala's monsoon runs from about June to September, and it changes how you travel more than most people expect. Hill roads to Munnar and Wayanad can slow to a crawl, and heavy spells occasionally trigger landslides on the ghat sections, so build in buffer time if you arrive then. The upside is fewer crowds and lower rates.

Two more things to avoid. Do not book Kannur as your entry airport without checking direct flights from your city first. And do not assume a train reaches your hill destination, because it never does, so plan the final leg by road. The most comfortable window overall is roughly October to February, when the weather is dry and travel is easy.

FAQs
What is the best way to reach Kerala?
Flying into Kochi is the best way for most travellers, because the airport is central and puts Munnar, Alleppey and Thekkady within a half-day drive. Choose Trivandrum for a south Kerala trip, or Calicut and Kannur for Wayanad and the Malabar coast. Trains and buses suit travellers coming from nearby South Indian cities.
Which airport is best to fly into for Kerala?
Kochi (COK) is the best all-round airport because it is the most central and the best connected of Kerala's four. Fly into Trivandrum only if your trip starts in the south, and into Calicut or Kannur if you are heading straight to the north. Kannur has the fewest direct domestic flights, so check availability first.
How many days do I need to reach Kerala and start touring?
By flight you can land at Kochi and be in Fort Kochi or Alleppey the same day, so touring begins on day one. By train from North India, allow up to two days in transit before your trip starts. Factor in the onward road leg to hill stations, which trains and flights do not cover.
Can I reach Munnar or Wayanad directly by train?
No. Munnar, Wayanad and Thekkady have no railway stations. You take a train to the nearest junction, Ernakulam or Aluva for Munnar and Kozhikode for Wayanad, then continue by cab or bus. The final drive to Munnar is roughly four hours from Ernakulam, so plan the day accordingly.
Is there a direct train from Delhi to Kerala?
Yes, direct trains run from Delhi to Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, but the journey is long, roughly 40 to 48 hours depending on the service. For most travellers coming that far, a flight into Kochi is far more practical. Confirm current schedules and fares on IRCTC before you book.
How do I reach Kerala by bus from Bangalore?
KSRTC and private operators run frequent buses from Bengaluru to Kochi, Kozhikode and other Kerala cities, including overnight AC Volvo and sleeper services. The road journey to Kochi takes around 10 to 12 hours. Book KSRTC seats on the official reservation site and private buses through the usual aggregator apps.
Does Kerala have an airport for international arrivals?
Yes. Kochi, Trivandrum and Calicut are all international airports with strong connections to the Gulf and other overseas hubs, and Kannur also handles international flights. Kochi handles the most international traffic, which makes it the easiest entry point for travellers arriving from abroad.
