Kerala in October

Kerala in October is warm, green and much quieter than the winter peak, with coastal highs near 31°C and comfortable hill stations in the low to mid 20s. The southwest monsoon pulls back as the northeast monsoon sets in, so rain falls in afternoon thunderstorms rather than all day. Rates sit in the shoulder band.

How is Kerala's weather in October?

October is Kerala's transition month. The southwest monsoon that soaked the state from June is pulling out, and the northeast monsoon is setting in over the south, so the rain changes character from all-day downpours to shorter afternoon and evening thundershowers.

Weather in Kerala in October

October holds the warmth of the monsoon months but dries out week by week. Coastal days sit around 30°C to 32°C with humid nights near 24°C to 25°C, while the hills stay cooler, Munnar near 22°C by day and about 16°C at night. These are typical October averages, not a forecast for any single year.

The important thing about October is that two monsoons change places. The India Meteorological Department normally declares the southwest monsoon withdrawn from the country by around the middle of October, and the northeast, or retreating, monsoon sets in over the southern peninsula, including Kerala, in the third week. The two behave differently. The southwest monsoon brought steady, slope-soaking rain to the Western Ghats. The northeast monsoon brings shorter, sharper thundershowers, heaviest over the south and the coast, often after a clear morning.

The exact withdrawal and onset dates shift by a week or two each year and are announced close to the time.

Overall Temperature in Kerala, area wise

The figures below are long-term October averages, not a forecast for any single year. They are grouped by region because an October afternoon in Munnar and an October afternoon in Kozhikode are not the same holiday.

These are long-term monthly averages, not a forecast for any single year. Munnar, Wayanad, Vagamon, Thekkady, Athirappilly and Kuttanad have no dedicated IMD weather station, so their figures are modelled or taken from the nearest station and approximate, and Bekal uses the Mangalore station on the same coast. October rain falls mainly in afternoon and evening thunderstorms rather than steady all-day rain, and the far north around Bekal is already drying while the south and the hills stay wet.

Kerala Hill Stations: Weather and Temperature

  • Munnar. Mild and green near 22°C by day and about 16°C at night, misty in the mornings while the estates stay wet. A light layer covers an early tea-estate drive, nothing like the winter cold.
  • Wayanad. Fresh near 25°C by day and 18°C at night, the plateau at its greenest after the monsoon. Good for drives and the Edakkal caves, with afternoon showers still likely.
  • Vagamon. Breezy days near 26°C and cool nights around 19°C, the meadows and pine forest green and walkable between showers.
  • Thekkady (Kumily). Mild days near 26°C and evenings around 19°C in the Periyar belt, with the forest full and the lake high after the rains.

Kerala Coastal and Backwater Regions: Weather and Temperature

  • Alleppey (Alappuzha). Warm and humid near 31°C by day and 24°C at night, the backwaters full and green, with afternoon thundershowers and calmer spells returning for the houseboats.
  • Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). Around 31°C by day and 25°C at night, one of the wetter spots this month as the northeast monsoon favours the south, roughly 280 mm across October.
  • Kollam. Much like Thiruvananthapuram, warm and humid with the same southern rain, and a quieter way into the backwaters.
  • Kozhikode (Calicut). Warm near 32°C by day and drying faster than the south, as the northeast rains lean away from the north coast.

Kerala's Other Destinations: Weather and Temperature

  • Athirappilly. The Chalakudy river gorge is about two hours from Kochi, where the waterfall runs near its fullest after the monsoon, with warm days near 31°C and heavy flow.
  • Kuttanad. The low backwater belt below Alleppey, warm and very humid near 31°C, the paddy country green and the channels brimming after months of rain.
  • Bekal. The far-north Kasaragod coast near 31°C by day, already drier than the south as the northeast monsoon spares the north, with the fort and quiet beaches.

Is there any rainfall in October?

Yes, but it is changing shape. October rain comes as afternoon and evening thundershowers rather than the steady all-day rain of the southwest monsoon, and it leans to the south. Thiruvananthapuram averages about 280 mm across roughly 16 rainy days and the Alleppey backwaters about 365 mm over 14 days, while Kozhikode in the north runs near 300 mm and the far-north coast at Bekal has eased to about 225 mm. The hills still catch a lot, Munnar near 338 mm and Vagamon near 350 mm, falling mostly in sharp bursts. Mornings are often clear, so most sightseeing gets done early, and you plan the afternoon around a likely shower rather than writing the day off.

How is the Sea Temperature in Kerala?

The Arabian Sea off Kerala stays warm in October, around 28°C to 29°C from Thiruvananthapuram up to Kozhikode. That is comfortable for time in the water. Whether it is safe to swim is a separate question, covered below, and it depends on the beach and the day, as the sea is still settling after the monsoon.

What to pack for a trip to Kerala in October?

Pack for warm, humid days and a daily chance of rain, with only a thin layer for the hills.

Light cottons and linen. October is warm and humid on the coast, so breathable fabric is the priority.

A proper umbrella or light rain shell. The northeast monsoon brings afternoon and evening thunderstorms most days, and they arrive fast.

Quick-drying footwear. Sandals and shoes that dry fast handle wet streets, backwater jetties and hill trails after a shower.

A thin layer for the hills. Munnar and Vagamon evenings are mild in the high teens, so a light fleece or shawl is plenty.

Insect repellent. Mosquitoes peak in the humid weeks after the monsoon, especially around the backwaters and wildlife areas.

Sun protection. Mornings are often bright and clear, so a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen still matter.

Modest clothing for temples. Keep shoulders and knees covered, and check specific dress rules before you go, as October is a temple-festival month.

A dry bag for boats and backwater days. Useful for phones and cameras on a houseboat or a Periyar cruise.

Keep a folding umbrella with you even on a clear morning. October showers build through the afternoon and pass quickly, so you rarely lose a whole day to them.

What Festivals and Events to attend in October in Kerala?

October is a busy temple month, led by Navaratri and the Kerala learning festival Vidyarambham. Dates follow the Malayalam and lunar calendars and move each year, so confirm them close to travel.

  • Navaratri and Saraswati Puja. The nine-night festival honouring the goddess, observed at Saraswati temples across the state. In 2026 it ran from about 11 October, with Mahanavami on 20 October.
  • Vijayadashami and Vidyarambham. The tenth day, and Kerala's big day of initiation into learning, when children are first guided to write. Vidyarambham falls on 21 October in 2026, with the largest gatherings at the Saraswati temples at Panachikkadu near Kottayam, Dakshina Mookambika at North Paravur and Thunchan Parambu at Tirur. The dates of 2027 are not confirmed yet.
  • Deepavali (Diwali). A lower-key festival in Kerala than in the north. In 2026 it falls on 8 November, so in most years it lands at the very end of October or in early November rather than mid-month.
  • Local temple utsavams. Several temples hold their annual festivals through October, with elephant processions and music at the larger ones. Schedules are set locally, so check the specific temple near your route.

The Sabarimala pilgrimage season does not open until 16 November in 2026, so unlike November, October stays clear of the heavy pilgrim traffic on the Pathanamthitta routes.

Is the sea safe for swimming and water sports in October?

Improving through the month, but still unsettled, and never automatically safe. The rough monsoon months from about June to September restrict swimming on most Kerala beaches, and October is the sea settling down rather than fully calm, with conditions easing toward the end of the month.

Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and flags mark the patrolled zone. At Kovalam, red-and-yellow flags show the guarded stretch.

Expect the sea to stay choppy early in the month. Check the day's flag and the lifeguard's advice, and treat calm-looking water with caution.

Water sports resume gradually. Licensed operators at Kovalam and a few busier beaches restart as the swell drops, mostly later in October. Confirm the operator and conditions on the day.

Watch for rip currents after heavy rain. Runoff and swell can change a beach quickly in the days after a downpour.

If there is no guard and no flag, stay out of the water.

How Crowded is Kerala in October?

October is shoulder season, quiet at the start and building through the month as the winter travellers begin to arrive.

The thin monsoon crowds give way to the first of the season's visitors from about mid-October, but you are well ahead of the December to January crush. Hotels, houseboats and drivers are easy to book and still at shoulder rates, and the big sights are uncrowded. Weekends draw domestic visitors to the hills and the backwaters, so book those a little ahead. On the whole, October is one of the easier months to plan at short notice.

How much does a Kerala Trip cost in October?

October sits in the shoulder band, above the monsoon lows but still well below the December to February peak, and rates climb gradually as the month goes on. Budget roughly Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000 per person a day for a mid-range trip on a twin-sharing, land-only basis, covering a mid-range hotel, a car with driver, entry fees and meals but not flights. Over a week, two people land somewhere near Rs 42,000 to Rs 98,000 before flights, moving with the hotel grade and how many hill nights you add. These are indicative figures as of October 2026.

The houseboat is the one line that swings a backwater budget the most. On the Alleppey and Kumarakom backwaters, a one-bedroom boat runs about Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000 a night for a deluxe, Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,000 for a premium, and from roughly Rs 18,000 upward for a luxury, quoted per boat per night with meals usually included. October rates sit in the shoulder band and rise toward the December peak, so an earlier-October night is better value than a late-month one.

What pushes prices this month is the calendar turning toward the season: the first winter arrivals from mid-October, weekend demand in the hills, and festival-period rates around the busier temple towns. To put real numbers against a plan, our Kerala tour packages and the Alleppey backwater houseboat package both give you a current, cost starting point per person.

Best Kerala Activities in October

October rewards the activities that come alive after the rain, on the water and in the green hills, worked around the afternoon showers.

A backwater houseboat night. The Alleppey and Kumarakom channels are full and green after the monsoon, boats are back on the water, and shoulder rates beat the December peak.

Athirappilly when the falls are powerful. The waterfall runs near its fullest after months of rain, about two hours from Kochi, and a clear morning is the time to see it.

A Periyar Lake cruise at Thekkady. The lake is high and the forest full, and animals move back to the waterline as the rain eases. The KTDC boat fare is around Rs 450 per person.

Tea-estate mornings in Munnar. The high ranges are at their greenest and mistiest now, so start early before the cloud and the afternoon shower build.

A Kathakali or Kalaripayattu show in Kochi. A good indoor fit for a showery evening, with daily performances in Fort Kochi.

An Ayurveda treatment. The humid post-monsoon weeks are a traditional time for treatment, offered at Kerala Tourism classified centres across the state.

What are the best 5 places to visit in Kerala in October?

Chosen for what October does well: water at its fullest, hills at their greenest, and the season's quiet before the winter crowds.

Athirappilly. October is Athirappilly near its strongest, when months of monsoon rain keep the waterfall in heavy flow through the Chalakudy river gorge. It is about two hours from Kochi (Cochin, COK), greener than the plains and best on a clear morning before the afternoon build-up. Keep well back from the wet, slippery rocks at the edge.

Alleppey and Kumarakom. The backwaters suit October well, full and green after the rains, with houseboats back on the water at shoulder rates below the December peak. Base at Alleppey (Alappuzha) or quieter Kumarakom on Vembanad Lake, take a houseboat at night or a smaller shikara, and plan the cruise around the afternoon shower.

Munnar. Munnar is the green pick this month, the tea ranges misty and at their best near 22°C by day and about 16°C at night. Eravikulam National Park is open, the Mattupetty and Top Station viewpoints reward an early start, and a light layer covers the cool, damp mornings. Expect a passing afternoon shower.

Wayanad. Wayanad is at its greenest after the monsoon, the plateau fresh near 25°C by day, good for the Edakkal caves, Pookode Lake and tea-country drives. Check current access before you go, as some sites reopened with limits after the 2024 landslides, Kuruva Islands are closed, and you must not enter the water near the waterfalls.

Kochi. Kochi fits October as the all-weather base, with Fort Kochi's streets, the Chinese fishing nets, cafes and galleries easy to enjoy between showers. It is the arrival point for most trips through Kochi (Cochin, COK), handy for Athirappilly and the backwaters, and lively without the December crowds.

For a route that strings together the green hills and the full backwaters at shoulder rates, our best of Kerala circuit through Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey fits October well, and the Munnar tour packages focus on the high ranges on their own.

Travel tips for a Kerala trip in October

Sightsee in the mornings. They are usually the clear, dry window, with showers building through the afternoon.

Keep the plan flexible. October showers are short and local, so have an indoor option ready for the afternoon, a museum, a show or a long lunch.

Book the houseboat early in the month. Rates are lower earlier in October and climb toward the season.

Check Wayanad and Ghat-road access. Some Wayanad sites reopened with limits after the 2024 landslides, Kuruva Islands is closed, and late northeast-monsoon rain can trigger slips on the hill roads.

Do not enter the water near waterfalls. Flow and rocks are dangerous after heavy rain, and several spots ban it outright.

Swim only at lifeguarded beaches. The sea is settling but still unsettled early in the month.

Carry rain gear every day. A folding umbrella or a light shell handles the daily showers without weighing you down.

Thinking about a different month? Kerala in September is wetter, with the southwest monsoon still steady and Onam often falling in the month, while Kerala in November is drier again and marks the start of the Sabarimala season, which crowds the Pathanamthitta routes. If you want dry, cool weather and do not mind the crowds and higher rates, Kerala in January is the classic peak-season alternative. For the wider picture, see our best time to visit Kerala guide.

FAQs

Yes, for many travellers it is one of the better months. October is warm and green after the monsoon, with afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, light crowds and shoulder rates before the December peak. It suits people who want value and quiet, will sightsee in the mornings and do not mind a daily chance of rain. The far north is driest.
