Kerala in May

Kerala in May is hot and humid, with the coast near 33°C by day and sticky nights, while Munnar stays mild in the mid 20s. Pre-monsoon thundershowers get heavier and the southwest monsoon arrives around month-end. Rates are at their pre-monsoon lowest, and the hills pull most visitors.

How is Kerala's weather in May?

May is the hottest and most humid month in Kerala, and the last stretch before the southwest monsoon. The plains feel heavy all day, the pre-monsoon showers grow frequent, and the hills stay cooler, which is why they fill up.

Weather in Kerala in May

May holds April's heat but turns stickier, and the pre-monsoon thundershowers that began in April get more frequent and heavier, usually breaking in the late afternoon or evening. Daytime highs on the coast ease a little from April as cloud builds, sitting around 32°C to 34°C, but higher humidity makes it feel hotter, and nights stay warm near 25°C to 26°C. The hills are the relief. Munnar stays near 24°C by day and around 17°C at night, with Vagamon and the high ranges cooler still on clear nights. These are typical May averages, not a forecast for any one year. The southwest monsoon normally reaches Kerala around 1 June, the date the IMD treats as the climatological onset, and the first spells sometimes arrive in the last days of May.

Overall Temperature in Kerala, area wise

The figures below are long-term May averages, not a forecast for any single year. They are grouped by region because a May afternoon in Munnar and a May afternoon in Kozhikode are not the same holiday.

These are long-term monthly averages, not a forecast for any single year. Munnar, Wayanad, Vagamon, Thekkady, Ponmudi and Athirappilly have no dedicated IMD weather station, so their figures are modelled or lapse-rate indicative estimates and approximate, and Bekal uses the Mangalore station on the same coast. The hill and foothill rainfall totals fall mainly in pre-monsoon thundershowers rather than steady all-day rain.

Is there any Rainfall in May?

Yes, and more than in April. May is the peak of Kerala's pre-monsoon season, when showers arrive as short, heavy afternoon and evening thunderstorms rather than steady rain, growing more frequent as the monsoon nears. On the coast, Thiruvananthapuram averages about 190 mm over roughly 13 rainy days and Kozhikode about 224 mm over 9 days, while the backwater belt around Alleppey runs near 285 mm. The hills catch the most, with Munnar near 256 mm and Vagamon near 296 mm as the slopes green up. Mornings are often still clear early in the month, so most sightseeing gets done before the late-day build-up. By late May the spells lengthen as the monsoon approaches.

How is the Sea Temperature in Kerala?

The Arabian Sea off Kerala is at its warmest in May, around 30°C from Thiruvananthapuram up to Kozhikode. That is bath-warm. Whether it is safe to swim is a separate question, covered below, and it depends on the beach and the day, more so as the sea roughens later in the month.

What to pack for a trip to Kerala in May?

Pack light for heat, with heavier rain in mind than April and a thin layer only for the hills.

  • Loose, light cottons and linen. May is the hottest, stickiest month, so breathable fabric matters more than at any other time of year.
  • A thin layer for the hills only. Munnar and Vagamon evenings are mild in the low 20s, so a light shawl or fleece is plenty, nothing like a winter jacket.
  • Strong sun protection. A hat, sunglasses and a high-SPF sunscreen. May's midday sun is the harshest of the year on the plains.
  • A proper umbrella or light rain shell. Pre-monsoon thundershowers are heavier and more frequent than in April, and the monsoon may set in before you leave.
  • Rehydration salts and a refillable bottle. The heat and humidity peak together now, so coconut water and ORS help on long days outdoors.
  • Breathable walking shoes or sandals that dry fast. Useful for hill trails and for sudden showers, and for temple visits where you remove footwear often.
  • Modest clothing for temples. Keep shoulders and knees covered. Some temples set specific dress rules, so check before you go.
  • Insect repellent. Mosquitoes pick up sharply as the air grows humid before the rains, especially around backwaters and wildlife areas.

Keep the heaviest sightseeing for the early morning. On the plains, the heat and the thundershowers both build through the afternoon, so plan indoor time or head uphill after lunch.

What festivals and events to attend in May in Kerala?

May is a quiet month for big festivals, falling between Thrissur Pooram in April and the monsoon lull. A few events still land in the month, and dates follow the lunar or Malayalam calendar, so confirm them close to travel.

  • Buddha Purnima. The Vaishakha full-moon day marking the Buddha's birth, a national holiday observed at Buddhist and some Hindu sites. Buddha Purnima falls on 20 May in 2027. Please note that the full moon timing can shift the date by a date.
  • Early-May village poorams and velas. A handful of temple poorams and velas across Thrissur and Palakkad run into early May before the festival season closes for the rains.
  • The closing weeks of the Theyyam season. In the Kannur and Kasaragod belt, the Theyyam ritual-dance season that runs from about December is in its final weeks in May, mostly at village kavus, or shrines. Please note that individual 2027 kavu schedules, which are set locally and wind down around May.

May's real calendar event is the weather. Plan around the heat and the approaching monsoon rather than a headline festival this month.

Is the sea safe for swimming and water sports in May?

Warm but turning rougher through the month, and never automatically safe. Early May is still among the calmer, more swimmable stretches, and the sea is bath-warm near 30°C. As the month goes on the pre-monsoon swell builds and the water gets choppier, and once the monsoon sets in around 1 June, the rough months of June to about September restrict swimming on most Kerala beaches and water sports stop.

  • Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and flags mark the patrolled zone. At Kovalam, red-and-yellow flags show where lifeguards are stationed.
  • Expect the water to roughen late in the month. Check the day's flag and the lifeguard's advice before you go in, and treat calm-looking water with caution.
  • Go early or late. The midday May sun is the harshest of the year, so dawn and the hour before sunset are the comfortable windows.
  • Water sports run through licensed operators at Kovalam and a few busier beaches, winding down as the monsoon nears. Confirm the operator and conditions on the day.
  • If there is no guard and no flag, stay out of the water.

How Crowded is Kerala in May?

May is low to shoulder season, the quietest and cheapest stretch before the monsoon. The heat keeps most foreign visitors away, and the coast and backwaters stay calm and good value. The hills are the exception.

May is the heart of the Indian school summer holidays, so Munnar and Wayanad fill with domestic families on weekends and through the month, more than in April. Book hill hotels ahead. The coast, the backwaters and most of the south stay quiet, and by late May, with the monsoon close, even the hills begin to ease.

How much does a Kerala Trip cost in May?

May is the cheapest stretch of the pre-monsoon window, cheaper than April and far below the December to February high season. Budget roughly Rs 2,800 to Rs 6,500 per person a day for a mid-range trip, on a twin-sharing, land-only basis, which covers a mid-range hotel, a car with driver, entry fees and meals but leaves out flights. Over a week, two people land somewhere near Rs 39,000 to Rs 91,000 before flights, moving with the hotel grade and the number of hill nights. These are indicative figures as of October 2026.

The houseboat remains the one line that swings a budget the most. On the Alleppey and Kumarakom backwaters, a one-bedroom boat is about Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000 a night for a deluxe, Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,000 for a premium, and from roughly Rs 18,000 upward for a luxury, quoted per boat per night with meals usually thrown in. May rates sit near the bottom of the year ahead of the monsoon, which is one of the real reasons to travel now.

What actually pushes prices in May is narrow: the domestic summer-holiday rush on the hill stations, weekend premiums in Munnar and Wayanad, and the first monsoon-season rate shifts if the rains come in early. To put real numbers against a plan, our Kerala tour packages and the Alleppey backwater houseboat package both give you a current, costed starting point per person.

Best Kerala Activities in May

The heat shapes the month, so the best of May is early, high, or near the water, and it is the last chance at some dry-season sights.

  • Early-morning tea-estate walks in Munnar. Start at first light, when the high ranges are cool and clear, before the plains heat builds.
  • A Periyar Lake wildlife cruise at Thekkady. May is the last of the dry-season viewing, when elephants, gaur and deer still gather at the shrinking waterline before the monsoon scatters them. The KTDC boat fare, around Rs 500 per person as of October 2026.
  • Athirappilly as the falls regain flow. The pre-monsoon showers start to lift the waterfall from its dry-season low, about two hours from Kochi, and it is best on a clear morning.
  • Meadow walks in Vagamon. The grassland plateau stays breezy and far cooler than the coast, good before the afternoon showers build.
  • Dawn and dusk beach time early in the month. The sea is bath-warm near 30°C, so keep the midday hours for shade and watch for rougher water later in May.
  • A low-rate houseboat night. Cruise the Alleppey or Kumarakom backwaters at the lowest rates before the monsoon, with far fewer boats than in winter.

What are the best 5 places to visit in Kerala in May?

Chosen for what May does well: cool hill escapes, the last of the dry-season wildlife, and a waterfall starting to come back to life.

  • Munnar. Munnar is the May escape. While the coast sits above 32°C, the high ranges stay near 24°C by day and around 17°C at night, cool enough for a light layer. Tea-estate mornings, the Mattupetty and Top Station viewpoints, and Eravikulam National Park, open since 1 April, reward an early start before any afternoon shower.
  • Athirappilly. Athirappilly suits May as the pre-monsoon showers start to lift the waterfall from its dry-season low, though it is not yet at monsoon fullness. The forested Chalakudy river gorge stays greener than the plains, and it is about two hours from Kochi (Cochin, COK). Go on a clear morning before the afternoon build-up.
  • Vagamon. Vagamon is the quiet pick, a meadow plateau near the Kottayam-Idukki border that stays breezy and far cooler than the coast, near 27°C by day with colder clear nights on the grasslands. May walks and the pine forests work well before the afternoon showers, and it draws a fraction of Munnar's holiday-season crowd.
  • Thekkady (Periyar). Thekkady earns its place for the last of the dry-season wildlife. Before the monsoon scatters the animals, elephants, gaur and deer still gather at Periyar's shrinking waterline, so the boat cruise and guided walks pay off. The Kumily belt near 28°C by day stays far easier than the coast, with cool evenings.
  • Ponmudi. Ponmudi is the southern hill escape, about two hours up a ghat road from Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), cool and quiet near 24°C by day while the city swelters. It suits a short break from the coastal heat. Check the ghat road is open, as it has had long closures.

For a route that pairs the cool hills with the backwaters at low-season rates, our best of Kerala circuit through Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey fits May well, and the Munnar tour packages focus on the high ranges on their own.

Travel tips for a Kerala trip in May

Sightsee early. Mornings are the comfortable window. The heat and the thundershowers both peak in the afternoon.

Base in the hills. A few days in Munnar, Vagamon or Thekkady make the whole trip far more bearable in May's heat.

Book hill hotels ahead. Domestic summer holidays tighten availability in Munnar and Wayanad, especially at weekends.

Carry rain gear and sun protection both. Pre-monsoon showers arrive fast after a clear morning, and the midday sun is harsh.

Stay hydrated. May's heat and humidity peak together, so coconut water, plain water and rehydration salts all help.

Swim only at lifeguarded beaches, early or late, and expect the sea to roughen as the monsoon nears.

Watch the monsoon timing. If you are travelling late in May, the first rains can arrive before you leave, so keep the plan flexible.

Thinking about a different month? Kerala in April is a touch less wet with the same heat and two big festivals in Vishu and Thrissur Pooram, while Kerala in June brings the southwest monsoon proper, the lowest rates of the year and the start of the Ayurveda season. If May's heat puts you off, Kerala in January gives you dry, cool comfort instead. For the wider picture, see our best time to visit Kerala guide.

FAQs

It can be, if you plan for heat. May is hot and humid on the coast and plains, but the hill stations stay comfortable, the crowds are thin and rates are the lowest before the monsoon. It suits travellers who will base in the hills, keep midday hours for shade and want quiet backwaters at low prices.
